Convertino, Victor A. Evidence for altered -adrenoreceptor responsiveness after a single bout of maximal exercise. J Appl Physiol 95: 192–198, 2003. First published April 4, 2003; 10.1152/japplphysiol.00123.2003.—We studied hemodynamic responses to and -receptor agonists in eight men to test the hypothesis that adrenoreceptor responsiveness is altered within 24 h of the performance of maximal exercise. Adrenoreceptor responsiveness was tested under two experimental conditions (with and without maximal exercise). Adrenoreceptor tests were performed 24 h after each subject performed graded upright cycle ergometry to volitional exhaustion. The 2 test days (experimental conditions) were separated by at least 1 wk, and the order of exercise and no-exercise conditions was counterbalanced. Steady-state graded infusions of phenylephrine (PE) and isoproterenol (Iso) were used to assess and -adrenoreceptor responsiveness, respectively. Slopes calculated from linear regressions between Iso and PE doses and changes in heart rate, blood pressure, and leg vascular resistance for each subject were used as an index of and -adrenoreceptor responsiveness. The slope of the relationship between heart rate and Iso with maximal exercise was 1,773 164 beats g 1 kg 1 min 1 compared with 1,987 142 beats g 1 kg 1 min 1 without exercise (P 0.158), whereas the slopes of the relationship between vascular resistance to Iso were 438 123 peripheral resistance units (PRU) g 1 kg 1 min 1 with maximal exercise and 429 105 g 1 kg 1 min 1 without exercise (P 0.904). Maximal exercise was associated with greater (P 0.05) vascular resistance (15.1 2.8 PRU g 1 kg 1 min 1) and mean arterial blood pressure (15.8 2.1 mmHg g 1 kg 1 min 1) responses to PE infusion compared with no exercise (9.0 2.0 PRU g 1 kg 1 min 1 and 10.9 2.0 mmHg g 1 kg 1 min 1, respectively). These results provide evidence that a single bout of maximal exercise increases 1-adrenoreceptor responsiveness within 24 h without affecting -cardiac and vascular adrenoreceptor responses.

Changes of Salivary IgA of athletes after a single bout of exercise in cold, warm and natural environments

Introduction: Exercise and environmental stressors cause alteration in different components of the immune and hormonal systems. Therefore, the purpose of this study was to explore the changes of serum cortisol and salivary IgA of athletes after a single bout of exercise cold, warm and natural environments. Methods: Ten young male athletes who ran on a treadmill for 1 hour at %60 VO2max in envir...

Leukocyte counts and lymphocyte responsiveness associated with repeated bouts of strenuous endurance exercise.

This study compared leukocyte counts and lymphocyte responsiveness during and after a second bout of high-intensity endurance exercise on the same day with the response to a similar but single bout of exercise. Nine athletes participated in three 24-h trials: 1) rest in bed (Rest); 2) one bout of exercise (One); and 3) two bouts of exercise (Two). All bouts consisted of 75 min at approximately ...

Effects of acute and chronic exercise on vasoconstrictor responsiveness of rat abdominal aorta.

Reductions in blood pressure that are associated with exercise training have been hypothesized to be the result of a sustained postexertional vascular alteration following single bouts of exercise. The purpose of this study was to determine whether a decrease in vascular sensitivity to vasoconstrictor agonists occurs after a single bout of exercise and whether this vascular alteration is sustai...

The Effect of a Single Bout Circuit Resistance Exercise on Homocysteine, hs-CRP and Fibrinogen in Sedentary Middle Aged Men

Objective(s) Homocysteine, hs-CRP and fibrinogen are three novel cardiovascular risk factors. The aim of this study was to examine the effect of a single bout of circuit resistance exercise on homocysteine, hs-CRP and fibrinogen levels in healthy and inactive men. Materials and Methods The subjects were randomly divided into the experimental group (n= 14) and the control group (n= 9). Circui...

Cutaneous blood flow in type 2 diabetic individuals after an acute bout of maximal exercise.

OBJECTIVE We previously demonstrated a positive association between chronic aerobic exercise and dorsal foot skin blood flow during local heating in type 2 diabetic individuals. Thus, we hypothesized that a prior acute bout of maximal exercise would also have positive effects on postexercise blood flow. RESEARCH DESIGN AND METHODS Subjects consisted of 32 individuals with type 2 diabetes and ...
